Being a Trainee Accountant with Myers Clark

Accountancy offers a challenging and rewarding career with excellent salaries and huge potential for career progression. Each September we look to recruit two graduates to join our graduate training programme leading to qualification as a Chartered Accountant. As a trainee accountant, you will enter a 3 year training contract and during this time you receive a wide range of practical experience whilst studying for the professional exams. You will be based in the Assurance and Advisory department but will get the opportunity to work in other departments during your 3 years training.

Application Process

To apply for the Graduate Trainee position, you will need to complete our application form.

Applications are taken from 1 May 2018 to 17 August 2018. Suitable applications will be asked to attend an initial interview, and if successful, they will be asked back for a full day to meet the team and undertake practical tasks.


The minimum entry qualifications are a 2.2 honours degree, 3 A Levels and GCSE Maths and English at grade A* to B.  Your degree does not need to be in accountancy or a business-related subject but it should academically robust and demonstrate the need for analytical skills and reasoned written arguments.

Study Package

The external study support package is worth in the region of £15,000 over the 3 years and includes the costs of study and revision courses, study texts, paid time off for course and exam days and exam fees. You will attend courses on block release. These courses, which prepare you for the professional exams, are delivered by Kaplan. You will also attend external courses that help build practical and soft skills to support your day-to-day work. These courses will be provided by SWAT UK. Both are leading training organisations. We also run in-house training workshops and update courses.

Work experience

When you are not away from the office on study leave, you will be working in a small team, getting practical experience and learning on the job what it really means to be a Chartered Accountant. Our clients are mainly based in and around London within a 20 - 30 mile radius of Watford. You will spend at least half your time working at clients’ premises. You will be interacting with clients almost from day one. Whilst office-based this will be by phone and email and when at the clients’ premises you will be dealing with then face-to-face.  As a general practice, we offer a broad range of services to our clients and the opportunities that this gives our students is one of the strongest reasons to choose Myers Clark.

Clients operate in a broad variety of industries and services, each of which provides its own particular challenge. As well as standard trading companies we also have clients who are charities, property management companies, pension schemes and clubs. This provides variety and keeps the day-to-day work interesting.

Developing your skills

As you complete your exams and gain practical knowledge and experience, you will be given more complex assignments to complete. Throughout your training, your work will be supervised and reviewed by senior staff responsible for your development. You will have the opportunity to experience all the services we provide and you will be encouraged to progress and take on increasing levels of responsibility.

1st year – You will spend 50% of your time being office-based under the supervision of qualified managers and supervisors; and 50% of your time working at client’s premises under the supervision of qualified audit seniors.

2nd year – You will spend about 25% of your time in the office. 75% of your time will be spent at clients’ premises and you will begin to take responsibility for distinct parts of the more complex audits and by the end of the year you should be completing more straight forward audits on your own.

3rd year – You will be mostly out of the office leading the on-site work for large/complex audits, and be responsible for a small team.

Other benefits

As well as a comprehensive training package and excellent work experience we offer: a competitive starting salary package current starting at £25,000 with the potential to rise over 3 years to £38,000 based on 6 monthly reviews of progression and exam success; a friendly and supportive work environment; regular review and assessment of your work; and a mentor programme. You will be allowed 4 weeks holiday, bank holidays plus an extra 3 days over Christmas and New Year when the office closes. You will be eligible to join the pension scheme and private health scheme. Expenses incurred as part of your job will be reimbursed.

What we are looking for

We expect our trainees to be self-motivated; self-confident and willing to take on responsibility; adaptable, sociable team players; professional in manner and appearance; honest with high ethical standards and good communicators.

Students should be willing to put in extra hours to meet deadlines if required. Unlike many firms, our students are given the option to have this time paid or to take the time in lieu. Students have to put in between 15 and 20 hours a week of their own time having worked a full day at work or college so, above all, they must be prepared for 3 years of hard work and be determined to succeed.

Post qualification

A high proportion of trainees stay on at Myers Clark after qualification and progress through the firm. Indeed, 4 of the 5 Directors trained at Myers Clark.
